We often come across various clients who might have heard certain buzz words but often do not understand what these words might exactly mean. As such we taught of helping you our by creating a glossary of the most common terms. By all means this will not be an exhaustive list and feel free to reach out to us if we have left something out. The list is in alphabetical order for easier searching.
- A/B testing – a technique used in order to do market research, two scenarios are tested on two user groups. The scenario most effective would make it to the final marketing strategy.
- above the fold – the fold is the line where things are hidden, either by see more buttons on facebook or scrolling down. Above the fold content tends to get more viewership.
- affiliate / affiliate marketing – companies who provide traffic to your site who act like advertisers on your behalf, they are typically compensated per registration/purchase or a percentage.
- B2B / B2C – Business to Business sell items or services to other suppliers while Business to Consumer would sell directly to end consumers and the wider market.
- blog – A placeholder for thoughts/information that can be shared online. This is a very important SEO tool.
- bounce rate – this is the percentage of visitors who leave after viewing a single page on your website.
- caching – storage of Web files in a quick access area on your server for quick delivery to you consumers.
- call to action (CTA) – a part of the message or button that attempts to persuade your customer to click or follow.
- click-through rate (CTR) – the number of clicks to a button or page as a % to over all visits.
- cookie – information stored on the user’s browser by the website to improve performance and customer experience. This has been are of debate in the last few years as it was heavily used for tracking user behaviours across the internet.
- domain name – the address of your company, this is required for any website or custom emails.
- deep linking – linking to a web page other than a site’s home page. This is used to interlink the website.
- email marketing – an effective tool to reactive or entices customers to return or purchase from your website.
- exclusivity – a term used in order to guarantee that the person you are working with only works with you on the particular product or service.
- first-mover advantage – being first to market guarantees a significant advantage. Typically others copy your success as such protecting this advantage is vital.
- Google Analytics – a free tool that can be used to gauge your traffic to your website/app, it tracks incoming users and movement of traffic on your site.
- GTM – am another free tool by Google, Google Tag Manager who offers the ability to add scripts or tags to your site.
- heat-map – this is a map with hot spots of where your users are clicking or watching, most popular tool for this is HotJar.
- impression – a single view of a video/ad/photo being displayed.
- keywords – words used to perform a search.
- keywords research – the identification of keywords related to your Web site, or your competitors. Also the analysis of which ones yield the highest return on investment.
- link building – the process of purchasing multiple articles with your website link on reputable sites in order to increase the popularity of your site. This is another effective SEO ranking tool.
- marketing plan – the part of the business plan outlining the marketing strategy for a product or service.
- META Tags – tags that describe your website and other characteristics which can be read by search engine for your website to be properly indexed.
